CMQ 242 Quality Assurance Simulation for Dimensional Inspection

Client Information

The Defense Acquisition University (DAU) is the Department of Defense’s central training institution for acquisition professionals. DAU equips the Defense Acquisition Workforce with the skills and knowledge needed to deliver effective, affordable warfighting capabilities, strengthening national security through agile, mission-ready acquisition support.

Challenge(s)

DAU sought to enhance the real-world readiness of Quality Assurance Specialists (QAS) by developing an immersive simulation that trains them to perform dimensional inspection and measurement tasks. The primary challenge was replicating the complex, hands-on skillset of interpreting engineering models, selecting proper tools, and performing accurate measurements in a virtual training environment—ensuring transferability to field performance.

Solution(s)

CTEC developed a standalone simulation environment aligned with CMQ 242 course outcomes, designed specifically for GS-1910 (QAS) and GS-0800 (engineering) personnel. This interactive HTML5-based simulation mirrors field inspection tasks, guiding learners through realistic sequences such as reading model-based definitions, selecting measurement tools, calibrating instruments, executing measurements, and interpreting results for pass/fail outcomes. Built using the three.js framework, the 3D simulation allows randomized part and measurement scenarios, enabling varied practice in a near-transfer context. A narrative and character-driven interface boosts learner engagement, while embedded feedback and post-simulation debriefs solidify understanding. Designed for flexible web access, this solution ensures learners can build inspection competency anytime, anywhere.

Highlights

  • Web-based simulation built with three.js
  • Interactive 3D inspection tools and environments
  • Scenario randomization for repeated practice
  • In-browser tool calibration and virtual measurement tasks
  • Character-driven guidance and narrative framing
  • Embedded learner feedback and post-simulation debriefs
